Fear The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 9

I’ve often believed that genre shows are at their best when they take more introspective turns, and Fear The Walking Dead is no exception. In light of the first half of a season that killed off two main characters—and saw the fall of yet another safe haven—“People lượt thích Us” is a fitting direction for the latter half of the season to take. What vì chưng traditional notions of identity, home, & family mean anymore in the absence of a structured society? When survival is first & foremost on everyone’s to-do list, what sorts of compromises must be made to lớn achieve lasting peace of mind? These are heady questions for a zombie show khổng lồ ask, & “People like Us” does its best lớn answer them.

“People” picks up several weeks after the game-changing events of “No One’s Gone,” in which Fear matriarch Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) sacrificed herself so that other might live. As noble & heroic as this final act was, Madison’s death nonetheless didn’t sit well with loyal viewers. Her departure from the show was especially egregious coming so soon on the heels of Nick’s (Frank Dillane) untimely demise. Now, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) is the last Clark standing. Among the remaining survivors, Alicia’s outlook on life is perhaps the most extreme and the least forgiving. She will forever be in her mother’s shadow and the runner-up to her late brother. But more on Alicia in a bit.

In the meantime, Morgan (Lennie James) has decided it’s time for him khổng lồ return home to Alexandria. In his heart, he knows this is where he belongs. This decision is the episode’s inciting incident, & sets off a series of events that leads his fellow survivors lớn take stock of the people they’ve become và the people they wish to lớn be. Morgan’s good at stirring up such introspection in others, though he doesn’t tend lớn indulge in too much of his own navel-gazing. He’s part armchair philosopher, part staff-wielding therapist. He seeks to lớn help others, even if he doesn’t possess the means khổng lồ heal himself.

Morgan was one of my favorite characters on The Walking Dead, và he continues lớn remain a favorite on Fear. Considering his crossover was a much-ballyhooed event, it seems unlikely that he’ll actually return to lớn Virginia. Which is fine, especially given how much his arrival on Fear shook things up. So as he makes the rounds, visiting various homesteads lớn say goodbye and extend an open invitation to come east, one has to take these gestures for what they are, a means for characters to lớn ponder their next moves.

The last we saw of John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt), he was convalescing after being shot by Alicia. He’s on the mend now, largely in part because of June’s (Jenna Elfman) careful ministrations. They, along with Charlie (Alexa Nisenson), now điện thoại tư vấn an abandoned bus home, but John wants lớn return lớn his remote lakeside cabin. And who could blame him, really? As far as post-apocalyptic homes go, his is one of the homiest we’ve seen. He extends the offer to lớn June to lớn join him, but instead of jumping at the chance, she becomes remote và even skittish.

This leads khổng lồ one of the episode’s better exchanges when June asks, “Do you think the cabin’s even still there?” The reply is vintage John Dorie: “Well I locked the door before I left.”

This offer poses an interesting dilemma for June (née Naomi, née Laura), a person who’s never been comfortable being herself. She’s afraid the woman John fell in love with all those months ago in the cabin doesn’t exist. It’s an interesting idea that who we are is fluid, shifting & changing as circumstances warrant. But the ever-pragmatic Althea (Maggie Grace) is quick lớn shoot down June’s insecurities. John Dorie knows exactly who the real June is. Và that’s the June he wants khổng lồ live out his days with.

As for the titular “people like us,” Alicia, Strand, & Luciana have gone their separate way from the rest of the group, settling into versions of home under the same roof as they nurse their various wounds. For Strand (Colman Domingo), his idea of home means returning to the opulent lifestyle he once enjoyed. One could argue that Strand, wine bottle in hand, has finally found a way khổng lồ not just survive, but also thrive.

This inebriated decadence suits the former millionaire, but Luciana (Danay Garcia) isn’t keen khổng lồ drink her troubles away. Instead, she’s been eking out a morose existence, living from day to lớn day and tuy vậy to song, burning through vinyl the way Strand burns through bottles. He’s content with being content, but Luciana questions her place in the world. She’s deeply affected by her many losses, & by the unending violence that seems khổng lồ define this zombie-infested world.

Which brings us to Alicia, who has arguably lost the most this season. In the wake of her mother’s death, Alicia now defines herself by her ability (or inability) to lớn help others. This has led her lớn a solitary existence in one of the mansion’s outbuildings. There, her grief has manifested itself as a manic urge lớn discover who’s been leaving cryptic notes on the zombies wandering onto the estate. This ultimately leads to lớn a boondoggle mission that leaves Alicia feeling more lost than ever.

By episode’s end, we’ve seen characters at their best, lượt thích John using a homemade Scrabble board khổng lồ connect with Charlie, to characters at a possible nadir, like Morgan running once again from his problems. Even if they don’t truly understand who they are or how they fit into the bigger picture, Alicia, Strand, Charlie & the rest comprise this world’s version of what family is.

So as a hurricane bears down on our survivors, the bigger cliffhanger isn’t if they’ll weather the storm, but how they’ll face down their collective survivor’s guilt.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 9 Review: People lượt thích Us
*

Firstly, I need khổng lồ express once again my disappointment with how quickly the Vulture arc was wrapped up so quickly. When Mel and his mysterious walker-capturing group first appeared on Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 2, I was incredibly intrigued.

This series had been without a legitimate human threat throughout its first three seasons, & once we finally got one, it was tied up within a handful of episodes.

Proctor John had potential as well towards the tail kết thúc of Fear the Walking Dead Season 3, but that was another arc that was abandoned too quickly following the collapse of the dam.

If there is a silver lining, it"s comforting khổng lồ know that the showrunners were able to create such an interesting và formidable foe for our survivors to lớn go up against. Let"s just hope that the next group of baddies stick around a bit longer, but hopefully not nearly as long as the Saviors on The Walking Dead.

Regardless, by the over of the episode, the group was thrust into a situation that they had never faced before, và will surely push them to their limits.

"People lượt thích Us" had an opening unlike anything we"ve ever seen before on this series, with a powerful storm making landfall và whisking away a few walkers. The opening moments were incredibly humorous, and it phối the tone for an episode that provided a decent amount of levity following the emotional midseason finale.

It was lượt thích Fear the Walking Dead meets Sharknado! Seriously, that"s all I could think about as the walkers were pulled into the storm và tossed lượt thích ragdolls.

It"s difficult to lớn say how much time has passed since the midseason finale, but given that Morgan"s leg has healed and John has mostly recovered from his near-death experience, I"d say this episode picks up four to six weeks later.

It was a long enough time for the group that was last seen supposedly united around a campfire, khổng lồ being a dispersed bunch during this episode.

While everyone was seemingly becoming closer at the close of Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 8, they couldn"t be further apart now.

Luciana is in a state of depression, Strand has been tapping into the wine cellar"s extensive collection, and Alicia has become a hermit searching for a purpose while coming lớn terms with Madison and Nick"s deaths.

Those deaths have taken an incredible toll on Alicia, so much so that she is carelessly trying to lớn save people.

It"s in Morgan"s nature lớn help others, so he wasn"t going lớn let Alicia go on her little rescue mission unaccompanied. Unfortunately, it was all for naught as the person that Alicia was trying so desperately to lớn save had been dead for quite some time by the time they reached him.

Strand: What makes you think that we"d embark on such a fool-hearted journey?
Luciana: You know the kind of people we"d run into.Strand: People lượt thích us.

If one positive came out of the whole ordeal, Morgan was able to empathize with Alicia with how she is trying to honor her mother"s memory along with her "no one"s gone til" they"re gone" mantra by helping others in need.

Alicia was really in need of someone to talk to và understand what she was going through. Someone to lớn tell her that it"s going to be alright. Sometimes that"s all a person needs khổng lồ hear.

John, Charlie, Althea, & June -- whom I still hotline Naomi on occasion -- were having their own phối of issues, as they have been unsuccessful at connecting with Charlie. Hell, John went so far as lớn create his own scrabble board và tiles khổng lồ try và extend an olive branch khổng lồ Charlie.

*

Isn"t John just the sweetest guy? Dorie is such an amazingly well-written character, and Garret Dillahunt plays him khổng lồ perfection. He"s so much fun to watch!

Unfortunately, Charlie wasn"t too receptive khổng lồ John"s gesture and decided to flee. And now her stupid antics of running away really opened a can of worms và carelessly put everyone else in danger.

Ugh! I really can"t stand Charlie. She"s just dead weight at this point, và I for one would not miss her one bit should she wind up with her face eaten.

Elsewhere, June confided in Al about her concern with John finding out that the person he fell in love with isn"t who she really is.

I never should have left. My friend ... I think he was right. It"s where I belong, it"s where I should be.

Morgan

I hope that isn"t true & that these two can pick up their relationship where they left off at the cabin. June is afraid of disappointing John, which means that those feelings are there, somewhere. Will she try and figure it out or run again as she so often does?

Morgan also has the sudden epiphany that he should never have left his friends in Virginia. Morgan left his friends because he didn"t want to watch people he cares for die, but the fact is that wherever he goes, whoever he meets, that is inevitably what is going to happen.

*

It was a decision I didn"t expect Morgan khổng lồ make, and especially with Althea being so willing lớn drive him there. However, Morgan and Althea seem to have formed an extraordinary friendship, one that I hope we will continue to explore.

Even though Morgan didn"t get any takers on going back lớn Alexandria with him, I loved the fact that he approached every thành viên of the group individually lớn offer the opportunity.

While the storm has put a damper on his plans at the moment, will Morgan still be mix on returning lớn Virginia once the storm subsides, or will he find a purpose to lớn stick around with his new friends? I"m inclined to lớn agree with the latter.

In all honesty, does anyone think Morgan is going lớn leave? Maybe I could see Morgan revisiting his old friends at some point -- possibly after Andrew Lincoln leaves The Walking Dead -- I vì not believe that will happen anytime soon.

Although, I have often wondered what it would be like if John và Althea were to lớn interact with Daryl & Carol. While I don"t think that type of crossover will happen anytime soon, it sure is a hell of a lot of fun to lớn think about.

So, now that the group is separated due lớn the storm -- and some poorly made decisions -- everyone has been put in a very precarious situation.

The idea of the group going up against mother nature is an interesting idea và something that was only seen briefly on The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 10.

However, on that series, Rick"s group faired a lot better because they were all able to hunker down together, but after the events on the midseason premiere of Fear the Walking Dead, this group is scattered, vulnerable, without shelter, & therefore, significantly weaker.

And let"s not forget about the Zombnado! Seriously, the idea of zombies being swooped up & hurled from the sky is absolute gold, & I can"t wait to lớn see more of it! What are the odds of Ian Ziering popping up và fighting them off? Slim, but one can hope!

Other tidbits from the episode:

Charlie being attacked by the walker in the river reminded me of Carl"s encounter in The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 15. R.I.P. Dale. I love drunk Strand! Don"t get me wrong, I love sober Strand just the same, but inebriated Strand is awesome! Did anyone else have a smile on their face when Morgan revealed his stash of protein bars? Strand"s drunken skirmish with the walker in the background, while Luciana was listening to music, was fantastic!

It"s time khổng lồ turn it over to you, Fanatics. What did you think of "People like Us"? Will Charlie be found? Will John & June be able to lớn pick up their relationship where they left off? Will Morgan ever return to lớn Virginia?
